Nuffield Placement 21 - Medicinal Chemistry

Supervisor: Mark Ashton
Organisation: Sundland University: Dept. of Pharmacy
Successful Applicant: Noor Bari
School: Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form

Research Area: Chemistry / Pharmacy
Length of Project: 6 weeks

Project Outline:

In 2008, 309,527 people were diagnosed with cancer in the UK and despite the progress that has been made in treating various cancers over the last 30 years, there is still an urgent need for new treatments. Nek-2, an important enzyme which is plays a role in the progression and development of a number of different types of cancers, provides a new target for the development of potential treatments. As part of the proposed project the student(s) will prepare a series of analogues of our lead structure. A particularly attractive feature of the chemistry is its simplicity and versatility which will allow the student to contribute to the selection of targets to pursue. The student will work in the University's new state-of-the-art synthetic chemistry laboratory and will be involved in the characterisation of all compounds made.

Start Date: 9 July 2012
