Nuffield Placement 2 - Pharmaceutics: dosage form design
Supervisor: Hamde Nazar
Organisation: Sunderland University: Dept. of Pharmacy
Successful Applicant: Shaden Tuma
School: Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form
Research Area: Pharmacy / Pharmaceutics / Chemistry
Length of Project:6 weeks
Project Outline:
Hydrogels are 3-D network structures that have been increasingly used as novel vehicles to deliver drugs. The project aims to develop a hydrogel to deliver insulin for the treatment of diabetes. The hydrogel will consist of a derivative of chitosan, a naturally derived polymer, and other synthetic components. The chitosan raw material needs to be chemically derivatised to yield a starting material that creates a hydrogel that is mucoadhesive and sensitive to temperature.
Start Date:July 2012
Requirements: An interest in chemistry and its application in pharmaceutical drug design development would be desirable.
