Nuffield Placement 17 - Forensic Chemistry
Supervisor: Dr Gillian Taylor
Organisation: Teesside University
Successful Applicant: Aneesa Al-ani
School: The Kings Academy
Research Area: Chemistry / Forensics
Length of Project: 4 weeks
Project Outline:
Forensic science explores a wide range of subject areas, students and staff regularly undertakes outreach and wider participation activities to a variety of participants. Chemistry is a fascinating subject but can be difficult to demonstrate safety and in a simple way. We propose that one Nuffield student join us to develop a learning and resource chemistry suitcase. It would need to be self-contained and portable, and focus on how the chemistry can be used to solve a murder. This would involve designing, testing small scale experiments and collate information in a suitable format for presentations. The student would work within the Skeletal Investigation Laboratory (SKIL), would work alongside and in cooperation with current PhD researchers and research active members of staff, and would participate in our regular team meetings.
