Nuffild Foundation Bursaries

About Nuffield Foundation Bursaries

Newcastle College STEM Outreach are the regional organisers for the Nuffield Foundation Bursaries scheme in the Tyne and Wear area. The scheme aims to offer around 1,500 funded student placements each year throughout the UK. Originally set up in 1943 by William Morris, who later became Lord Nuffield, this national scheme mainly supports self contained educational and social welfare projects to attract young people into science based careers.

This inspirational scheme offers aspiring young scientists the opportunity to explore their chosen field of science, technology, engineering or maths during a 4 to 6 week summer placement. Placements are offered by leading local and national businesses, scientific industrial research institutes and our excellent local universities.

Nuffield Bursaries are available to school and college students in their first year of an advanced or higher level science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) course. This is a great opportunity for students to work alongside professional STEM practitioners on real research projects in an area which interests them. Students will receive £75 per week towards travel and other expenses.

Who is eligible to apply?

All students studying a first year Advanced or Higher STEM course should apply, including vocational as well as academic courses.

So is this like a work experience placement?

Not really. Unlike some work experience placements (where students make tea and photocopy) students are expected to work on well defined projects which contribute, in a real way, toward the work of their host organisation. These projects have clear goals and achievable outcomes within the 4 to 6 weeks of the placement enabling students to gain a more valid insight into their chosen field with a sense of achievement and personal and professional growth.
