STEMNetworking to STEM Ambassadors

- 11:59 am

STEMNET will be including a feature about STEMNetworking in the next edition of the UK-wide STEM Ambassadors newsletter due out in July. We will also be proactively promoting STEMNetworking to STEM Ambassadors over the coming months to increase the number of STEM Ambassador profiles and in particular the number of public STEM Ambassador profiles.

STEM Ambassadors can already opt in to have a profile on STEMNetworking by completing the ‘Opt in to STEMNetworking’ tick box on their Data Protection page (we have also updated the STEM Ambassador database welcome page with instructions on how to do this). Please be aware that STEM Ambassadors must have the status ‘Approved’ on the STEMNET database before they can have a profile on STEMNetworking. Once a STEM Ambassador has opted in to STEMNetworking they will be able to edit their profile, upload blogs and resources etc. They will also be able to make their STEMNetworking profile public so that visitors to the STEMNET website will be able to get a better idea of what STEM Ambassadors can offer schools.

We would also now like STEM Ambassador Contract Holders to now start encouraging already registered and new STEM Ambassadors to opt in to be part of STEMNetworking and also to encourage Ambassadors to have public profiles on STEMNetworking (Ambassadors can opt out of having a public profile at any time. If their profile is not made public then it will only be viewable to STEMNetworking logged in users).

Deadline for the anti-doping STEM Challenge has been extended until 17 June 2010

June 9, 2010 - 10:58 am

Last chance to win £3000 in equipment and an exclusive visit to the Science Museum!

Would you like £3000 worth of STEM Club equipment? Would you like the opportunity to take a team of pupils on an exclusive visit to the Science Museum in London? You will have your very own curator-led tour of the museum, a private viewing of the “Who am I?” exhibition, a behind-the-scenes tour of the IMAX theatre and time in the Launchpad gallery.

What’s more, we’ll cover the expenses for up to six pupils and two adults, including transport, accommodation and meals.

This is the top prize of the Anti-Doping Challenge, brought to you by STEMNET as part of the STEM Challenges series.

We’re challenging pupils to prove to GlaxoSmithKline and King’s College London that they have the skills to perform some of the anti-doping laboratory techniques. From laboratory accreditation and quantitative analysis to security and ensuring the chain of custody of samples, this challenge really does give you an insight into what an anti-doping laboratory does.

Register your team by 17 June 2010 here http://www.stemchallenges.net/school-register.html – it only takes a few minutes! You then have until 6 July to prepare your entry for judging.

Find out more information about the challenge here http://www.stemchallenges.net/explore-the-challenges/challenge-3/

Help inspire young people with London 2012 and the STEM Challenges!

June 4, 2010 - 11:54 am

The third STEM Challenge for schools, inspired by London 2012, is well underway.  This fantastic series of competitions, managed by STEMNET, has already had students up and down the country designing a national handball arena and coming up with creative solutions for a canoeing, sailing or rowing glove.

The current challenge asks pupils to prove to GlaxoSmithKline and King’s College London that they have the skills to perform certain anti-doping laboratory techniques. From laboratory accreditation and quantitative analysis to security and ensuring the chain of custody of samples, this challenge really does give pupils an insight into what an anti-doping laboratory does.

Due to the popularity of the STEM Challenges, we are looking for more volunteers to help with the judging on 6th July.  Judging will take place in schools and is done by STEM Ambassadors.  It will involve meeting a team in a school, listening to their presentation, asking questions and then reporting back to STEMNET on the outcomes.  Full written guidance will be provided to enable you to make informed decisions about the team(s) you visit.

This is a perfect opportunity to get involved in a project that has been inspired by London 2012.  Several judges have told us that they’ve thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet enthusiastic teams and creative individuals.

If you are interested and would like to be considered for judging on 6th July, then please reply no later than Wednesday 16th June.  The actual judging takes about 30 minutes per team and we will make every effort to minimise the distance that you have to travel.

More information on the STEM Challenges can be found at www.stemchallenges.net.

Best wishes

Matthew Tosh

Last call to inspire future engineers

Companies and organisations are being called upon to inspire the next generation of engineers by taking part in the North East Engineering Show which is making a welcome return this summer.

Rebranded as ‘boom!’ the event will see thousands of future engineers descend on what is the engineering equivalent of the Greatest Show on Earth.

The event, which is aimed at students age 11-17 and remains free for North East schools, is sponsored by One North East and combines an exciting fast-moving theatre style performance and interactive exhibition. The show takes place at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle from Tuesday 13 July until Friday 16 July.

Companies and organisations that would like to participate have until June 4 to register their interest in exhibiting at the event, so they don’t miss getting into the event guide which is currently being put together.

Those coming on board will be in great company as the event already has confirmed attendance from Honda’s ASIMO, the world’s most advanced humanoid robot with other highlights including RuBOT the amazing Rubik’s Cube solving robot, Starchaser’s Skybolt Sounding Rocket which stands at nearly 12 metres, RAF flight technology and a coffee powered car.

North East based universities and companies including Subsea North East, North East Process Industry Cluster, BAE Systems, Nissan, Siemens and The Tanfield Group will be showcasing their new technology and engineering innovation.  The event will be presented by Robert Llewellyn of Scrap Heap Challenge and Red Dwarf fame.

Last year, the show provided an opportunity for 6,800 young people and teachers to sample first hand the importance of engineering in modern day life, and appreciate the Science, Technology and Maths skills that underpin careers in Engineering.

This year, schools have already registered over 5,000 young people to attend the event, with bookings still coming in. Schools still wishing to bring a class or year group to ‘boom!’ are urged to book via the event website www.boomnortheast.co.uk or phone the event team on 0191 240 7008.

One North East manufacturing and productivity manager, Dr Colin Herron, said: “boom! offers a great opportunity to inspire the next generations of engineers.  Last year the event created a huge uplift in enthusiasm and interest for Engineering, Science and Technology amongst young people and we are confident that this year the event will be even bigger and better so I would urge those with something to share to register their interest today.”

ASIMO is the culmination of more than two decades of humanoid robotics research and development.  The latest version of ASIMO made its UK debut in the region in 2008 and returns for the third time to inspire the North East’s next generation of engineers.
The Skybolt Sounding Rocket has been designed to flight test a Starchaser rocket engine and is designed to be reusable, a trait that is almost unique compared to other existing sounding rockets.

The show provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to find out about the diverse range of rewarding career options available in engineering with representation from employers in key regional sectors including renewable energy, subsea engineering, zero emission vehicles, low carbon technologies, ICT/digital, process industry/chemical engineering and construction/civil engineering.

Exhibitors at this event are being asked to complete an exhibitor’s registration form by Friday 4 June. Those with inspirational or interactive exhibits will be offered free space.  Please email jenny@if-fma.com for a copy of the form or phone the event team on 0191 240 7008.

Ends.
