Partnership between STEM Ambassadors and EBPs

Woul you like to help with placement for teachers or Maths activities for Year 9 students?

Education Business Partnerships in Tyne and Wear are helping schools in the county in contacting businesses and setting up new business links. There are 2 projects coming up soon and we would like to invite our STEM Ambassadors and their organisations to get involved. Please check the details below.

Event: Maths in Action – A day at the Races
Date: 23/10/2009
Time: 9.30am-3.30pm
Address: Gosforth Park Racecourse, Newcastle
Year: 9 (age 13-14)
Description: For Y9 students from Whitley Bay High School. Students take part in a series of hands on workshop to show how Maths is used in the workplace. If you are STEM Ambassador interested in Maths and happy to deliver Maths workshop/quiz/hands on activity, please contact the organisers.

Project: Initial Teacher Training for Diploma Teachers (Professional Development Placements)
Dates:
Block 1

Friday 25th September 2009 – 6th November 2009 (7 full days in total)
Friday 2nd October 2009 – 6th November 2009 (6 ½ days in total)

Block 2

Friday 22nd January 2010 – 5th March 2010 (7 full days in total)
Friday 29th January 2010 – 5th March 2010 (6 ½ days in total)

Address: STEM Ambassador's workplace in Tyne and Wear
Description: STEM Ambassadors with background in engineering, construction, IT and environmental and land based services are needed to offer ‘placement’ for teachers to help them to prepare for New Diploma courses and do workplace case study.
From each placement the teacher will be expected to develop the following outcomes:

• A pen portrait of the company and its activities
• A case study of some key employees with details of roles/responsibilities, entry qualifications and relevant experience
• The outline of a project, which could be completed by the students as part of their diploma, studies. This project to be developed with the placement company approval.

STEM Ambassadors needed for STEM Days!

Come to a STEM Day in September of October and win an ipod!

Hello STEM Ambassadors!
We have a number of new STEM Days coming. Please take a look at the list of STEM activities below and if you can help in any way, just contact us as soon as possible (ideally by the end of August 2009).
By taking part in any of the STEM activities presented here you can also win an ipod! All STEM Ambassadors actively involved in any of the STEM Days promoted here will enter a competition! Results will be announced at the end of October 2009.

Five STEM activities include:
1)
Title: STEM Day
Date: Thursday 17/09/09
Time: 8.50am-11.50am + lunch
Location: Newcastle
Year group: 10 (boys; 14-15 year olds)
Description: 8 STEM Ambassadors representing different professions (science, technology, engineering, maths) working a rota of 30 minutes sessions. Each student will cover 5 sessions. Hands on/interactive activities and talks are welcome. Lunch will be provided.

2)
Title: STEM Day
Date: Thursday 17/09/09
Time: 12.30pm-3.30pm
Location: Newcastle
Year group: 8 (girls; 12-13 year olds)
Description: 8 STEM Ambassadors representing different professions (science, technology, engineering, maths) are needed to talk about the work they do and career they have. Hands on/interactive activities and talks are welcome. 30 minutes presentation repeated a few times to small groups of students.

3)
Title: Celebration of Science Excellence
Date: Wednesday 30/09/09
Time: 9am-3pm
Location: North Tyneside
Year group: 10 (14-15 year olds)
Description: 3 STEM Ambassadors representing different professions (science, technology, engineering, maths), from industries and universities, are invited to run activities and talks for students. Hands on/interactive activities and talks are welcome.

4)
Title: Recycling Roadshow in Creativity Week
Date: Thursday 8/10/09
Time: tbc
Location: Sunderland
Year group: 8 (12-13 year olds)
Description: Creativity Week with a number of STEM activities takes place between 6 and 9 October 2009. On Thursday students will be involved in Recycling Show and 2-3 STEM Ambassadors with interest in recycling and environment are needed to help students to look after waste, unwanted or out of fashion things, to make scripts for a pod cast about waste and recycling, to help students to make their pod casts and to answer any recycling related questions.

5)
Title: STEM Day
Date: Wednesday 21/10/09
Time: 9am-3pm
Location: Sunderland
Year group: 9, 10, 11 and 6th form (70 pupils in total)
Description: 10 STEM Ambassadors - speakers and workshop presenters - from industries and universities across the North East are invited to visit a special school and inspire students to consider continuing into STEM subjects beyond GCSE.
