The ECS Factor

Part of National Science Week

As part of National Science Week, the Dove Marine Laboratory offers emerging marine enthusiasts the opportunity to participate in a novel research challenge.

Pupils will identify a problem or issue connected to the marine environment that interests them and devise a research solution to this problem. The possible topics covered are very broad ranging, and could include for example a technological solution for oil exploration, a scientific research theme on climate change and oceans or an ecological investigation into marine communities. The scope is only limited by the pupil’s creativity and innovation.

The winning teams will gain hands on experience in undertaking research for the day in North-east waters on board the scientific research vessel. The expedition will depart from Royal Quays Marina at 10am on the 18th March 2010.

Proposals should be submitted to the Dove Marine laboratory by 4.00 pm on Friday 12th February, 2010.

Funding for Science and Engineering Week

A guide

A step by step guide to finding funding for your event.

Whatever you decide to do for National Science and Engineering Week you will probably need to arrange some support or funding.

For small scale events this may be support in kind – the loan of a venue, the donation of equipment etc.

However, for larger events you may need a grant. If the success (or even the existence) of your event depends on funding then securing adequate support will be your first major task.

This booklet contains tips on making applications, approaching potential sponsors and details of some useful organisations.
